Thoracentesis to remove 1200cc of Plural Fluid at Harborview

by MissyMoo on February 28, 2010

This is me getting a Thoracentesis at Harborview Medical Center in downtown Seattle. They removed 1200cc of Plural Fluid from my lung cavity. The fluid was around my left lung causing it to collapse. Procedure = Thoracentesis Fluid = Plural Fluid / Plural Effusion Volume = 1200cc

OMG. They would have to knock me out. I would just absolutly freak. I developed a post surgical abcess deep in my belly that they had to drain. They had to seriously sedate me because I had a panic attack. They got about 50 cc of pus. It was nasty

I know this proceedure is done following injuries, but is this also done to relieve bronchial distress due to illness? Just curious.

Thanks for posting. . . had mine yesterday after 6 weeks of triple bypass. . . was wondering what they did in the procedure !! They drained off 1800mls from my left lung. Had a minor episode of coughing and anxiety and difficulty breathing but now much much better and a whole lot easier to breath !!!

MaurizioM89 March 1, 2010 at 4:38 am

woah! how can he breath with all that liquid in the lung!

nuneswhite March 1, 2010 at 4:41 am

Wish i could laugh but i’ll just cough. I don’t smoke and i thought about weed but i don’t think it will get rid of the fluid.

s13silly March 1, 2010 at 5:35 am

smoke weed and get the dry mouth instant cure
joking. . . :P

I have noticed that when i lie flat, i cough more. Can’t go to hosp cause my card expired. I got some natural meds and the mucus has lessened. The aches and fever r gone. Sleeping eleated does work though. Sometims if i don’t, i will just keep coughing and spitting. Thanks for the well wishes.

Well you should definitely try to get to the hospital asap or u risk developing an infecton that can cause pneumnia, until then perhaps sleeping with your upper body slightly elevated may help, you can use 2-3 pillows under your upper back. Get to the doctor soon and hope u get better.

joinapak March 1, 2010 at 6:15 am

@nuneswhite well im not sure if this will work but try eating something that wont make you thirst like nothing salty and lots of water i know sounds like any other remedy but what the hell just tryin to help

nuneswhite March 1, 2010 at 6:53 am

I am at home sick. I can hardly sleep cause i can’t stop salivating. Sometimes, when i try not to, i feel like i’m going to drown. So i keep salivating and expelling. Is there something i can do at home?

annathefootdoc March 1, 2010 at 7:03 am

yup

annathefootdoc March 1, 2010 at 7:28 am

1. 2 Liters is the amount of fluid that was removed from his lung

annathefootdoc March 1, 2010 at 8:16 am

aspiration pneumonia is more likely the cause. suffocation. . . not likely at all but can’t be ruled out

annathefootdoc March 1, 2010 at 9:15 am

YOu are correct to a certain extent. yes she probably aspirated. But that in turn would cause an aspiration pneumonia which if not treated and caught in time, can be fatal. You don’t simply die from the aspiration itself its usually from the pneumonia that develops afterward.
